GLDA
GLDA (tetrasodium N,N‑bis(carboxymethyl)‑L‑glutamate) is a readily biodegradable, amino‑acid‑based chelating agent developed as a more sustainable alternative to traditional phosphates and aminopolycarboxylic chelants. It is typically supplied as a highly soluble aqueous solution with strong chelating power toward hardness and various transition‑metal ions over a wide pH range. GLDA is used in cleaning products, personal care, textile and paper processing, and water treatment, combining effective metal control with an improved environmental profile and excellent biodegradability.
Source
- derived from L‑glutamic acid through controlled covalent modification
- produced as the sodium salt (mainly tetrasodium GLDA) with optimized water solubility
- commercially available primarily as high‑concentration aqueous solutions
- based on renewable or partly renewable raw materials, supporting high biodegradability
Variations
- different solution concentrations (e.g. 35–50%) balancing handling, viscosity and transport efficiency
- grades tailored to specific pH ranges (slightly acidic to alkaline) for various industries
- low‑impurity and low‑metal specifications for high‑purity and sensitive applications
- „green“ grades designed to replace phosphates, NTA and EDTA in environmentally driven formulations
Applications In The Industry
Household chemicals industry
In detergents and cleaning products, GLDA provides efficient chelation of hardness and transition‑metal ions with excellent biodegradability and lower ecotoxicity. It enhances the performance of surfactants, bleaches and disinfectants, stabilizes formulations and minimizes discoloration and degradation caused by metal contaminants. It is suitable for eco‑label laundry and dishwashing detergents, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, and professional cleaning products.
Personal care industry
In personal care formulations, GLDA acts as a mild chelant that binds metal ions from water and raw materials, protecting products from color changes, oxidation and loss of fragrance and actives. It is suitable for shampoos, body washes, soaps, skin‑care and oral‑care products, especially where „green“ positioning and high biodegradability are important. GLDA supports foam, viscosity and optical clarity stability.
Textile industry
In textile applications, GLDA is used in pretreatment, washing and dyeing as a chelant controlling the adverse impact of metal ions on enzymes, surfactants and dyes. It improves whiteness after pretreatment, reduces metal spotting and supports more even dyeing, while minimizing metal‑containing deposits in equipment. It is particularly attractive for mills targeting sustainable, low‑phosphate processing lines.
Paper industry
In papermaking, GLDA replaces phosphates and conventional chelants in stock preparation and bleaching, where control of Fe, Mn and Cu ions is crucial. It stabilizes peroxide systems, delivers higher and longer‑lasting brightness, reduces yellowing and deposit formation on equipment. Its superior biodegradability helps mills meet stringent environmental standards for effluents.
Water treatment industry
In water treatment, GLDA is applied as a biodegradable chelant in cooling, boiler and process‑water programs. It controls hardness and transition‑metal ions, helps prevent scale and deposits, and can be combined with polymers and phosphonates in low‑phosphate or phosphate‑free programs. It is well suited for facilities facing tight phosphorus and persistent‑chelant discharge limits.
Benefits Of Use
- high biodegradability and favorable ecotoxicological profile compared to conventional chelants
- efficient binding of hardness and transition‑metal ions across a broad pH range
- good compatibility with surfactants, enzymes, oxidants and personal‑care ingredients
- ideal for „green“ and environmentally friendly formulations in cleaning, personal care, textile, paper and water treatment
