Glycol ethers

Glycol ethers are a family of organic solvents based on glycol molecules (e.g. ethylene or propylene glycol), whose solubility and volatility are tuned by introducing ether and/or hydroxyl groups. They exhibit excellent compatibility with water and many polar and non‑polar resins, making them highly versatile solvents and co‑solvents. Due to their controlled evaporation rate, ability to bridge water and organic phases and to improve rheology, glycol ethers are key raw materials in cleaning, coatings, printing inks, adhesives and electronics applications.

Source

  • produced industrially by reacting appropriate glycol derivatives (e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide) with alcohols
  • petrochemical feedstocks are used under tightly controlled synthesis conditions to obtain specific chain lengths and functionalities
  • fractional distillation is applied after synthesis to separate different ether types and degrees of ethoxylation/propoxylation
  • available as single compounds (e.g. butyl glycol, butyl diglycol) or as specialized blends optimized for defined applications

Variations

  • ethylene glycol ethers (e.g. butyl glycol) – strong solvents for resins, paints and stains
  • propylene glycol ethers – often with a more favorable toxicological profile, used in modern coatings and cleaners
  • glycol diethers (e.g. butyl diglycol) – slower‑evaporating, suitable for extended open time and uniform drying
  • low, medium and high volatility grades – selected according to required drying time and system rheology

Applications In The Industry

Industrial cleaning industry

In cleaning formulations, glycol ethers act as powerful co‑solvents for greases, oils, polymeric films and soil, while remaining miscible with water. They enable highly effective yet controlled‑evaporation cleaners for hard surfaces, degreasers and industrial equipment cleaners. They are particularly important in neutral and mildly alkaline systems, where they boost solvency without aggressive pH and help prevent streaking and spotting after drying.

Adhesives and sealants industry

In adhesives, glycol ethers serve as solvents and rheology modifiers that improve application, leveling and open time of the film. They ensure good wetting of substrates (metal, plastics, wood, paper) and uniform film formation of binders, especially in water‑borne and hybrid systems. Their tunable evaporation rate helps balance rapid strength development with sufficient positioning and assembly time.

Electronics industry

In electronics, specific high‑purity glycol ethers are used in cleaning and degreasing formulations and as solvents in pastes and inks for printed circuit boards. Their controlled evaporation supports uniform drying without residues or cratering on fine structures. Thanks to their good compatibility with polymeric binders and capacity for fine rheology adjustment, they are essential in solder mask production, solder pastes, photoimageable layers and various protective coatings for PCBs.

Printing inks and printing industry

In printing inks, glycol ethers play a key role in controlling viscosity, drying rate and wetting behavior. They ensure stable ink flow through the press, good transfer to the substrate and reduced foaming and misting. In water‑borne, flexographic and gravure systems they act as co‑solvents that help dissolve resins and pigments, stabilize emulsions and deliver sharp print definition with controlled drying and reduced odor.

Paints and coatings industry

In the paints and coatings industry, glycol ethers are used to improve rheology, leveling and adhesion, particularly in water‑borne and low‑VOC systems. They help prevent orange peel, cratering and brush marks, delivering smooth, uniform films. As coupling solvents they provide compatibility between the aqueous phase and organic resins, thereby enhancing dispersion stability and coating durability under service conditions.

Benefits Of Use

  • wide range of polarity and volatility enabling precise tailoring of formulation performance
  • excellent compatibility with water and resins, with improved wetting and leveling on diverse substrates
  • enhanced solvency power in cleaners, paints, adhesives and inks, reducing the need for harsher solvents
  • ability to optimize drying, rheology and system stability, leading to higher surface quality and process reliability
