HEC
HEC (hydroxyethyl cellulose) is a nonionic, water‑soluble polymer obtained by chemically modifying natural cellulose with hydroxyethyl groups. It is supplied as a white to slightly off‑white powder that forms clear to slightly opalescent solutions of various viscosities in water. HEC is used as a thickener, stabilizer and rheology modifier in personal care products, cleaners, coatings, construction materials and paper applications, thanks to its good compatibility with ionic and nonionic components and its excellent film‑forming properties.

Applications In The Industry
Personal care industry
In personal care, HEC serves as a thickener and rheology modifier in shampoos, body washes, liquid soaps, creams, lotions and gels. It enables the creation of clear, stable gels with pleasant texture, improves foam stability and particle suspension (e.g. exfoliating beads). Its nonionic nature ensures compatibility with anionic and amphoteric surfactants and delivers a mild feel on skin and hair.
Household chemicals industry
In cleaning products, HEC controls viscosity and flow behavior of liquid laundry detergents, hand dishwashing liquids, all‑purpose and sanitary cleaners. It provides pseudoplastic rheology (high viscosity at rest, easy flow under shear), improving dosing, cling on vertical surfaces and overall user perception. It also supports suspension of active particles and stabilization of emulsions.
Paints and coatings industry
In coatings, HEC acts as a thickener and pigment stabilizer in waterborne paints, primers and auxiliaries. It enhances brush and roller application, reduces sagging and dripping and helps achieve uniform films. Its film‑forming properties contribute to good adhesion and surface uniformity, with broad compatibility with common latex binders and additives.
Construction industry
In cement‑ and gypsum‑based construction materials (tile adhesives, grouts, skim coats, plasters), HEC is used for water retention, thickening and improved workability. It increases open time, enhances adhesion and reduces slippage and segregation. Controlled rheology ensures stable application, better surface finish and reduced cracking during drying.
Paper industry
In the paper industry, HEC is applied in surface sizing and coating as a binder and rheology modifier. It improves pigment hold‑out, smoothness, printability and abrasion resistance, and is used in finishes where enhanced surface strength and more uniform quality are required.
