Hydrochloric acid - HCl

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a strong mineral acid, a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a sharp, characteristic odor, completely miscible with water. In industrial practice it is used as an aqueous solution of HCl gas at various concentrations. Due to its strong acidity and high dissolving power toward carbonates, oxides and many metal salts, it is one of the key acids for water treatment, mining and metallurgical processes, oil & gas operations and industrial cleaning and descaling.

Source

produced industrially:

  • as a by‑product in chlor‑alkali plants and during chlorination of organic compounds
  • by direct synthesis from gaseous chlorine and hydrogen followed by absorption in water

most commonly supplied at 30–37% HCl by mass, as well as in diluted forms tailored to process requirements

easily transported and stored in suitable corrosion‑resistant tanks and tank trucks

available in technical, chemical and higher‑purity grades for specific applications

Variations

  • technical hydrochloric acid – for general industrial use (metallurgy, mining, cleaning)
  • high‑purity acid – for applications with stringent limits on metallic and organic impurities
  • diluted formulations (e.g. 10–20% HCl) – optimized for water treatment, CIP cleaning and descaling of equipment
  • specialized formulations for oil & gas wells, including stabilized acid with corrosion inhibitors

Applications In The Industry

Water treatment industry

Hydrochloric acid is widely used for pH control in industrial, boiler and cooling waters, as well as in municipal wastewater treatment plants. It removes scale deposits on membranes and ion‑exchange units, regenerates cation‑exchange resins and helps to eliminate iron, manganese and carbonate precipitates. Controlled use ensures stable water chemistry and extended service life of equipment.

Mining industry

In mining, hydrochloric acid is applied in leaching of selected ores and concentrates, particularly oxide ores where dissolution in a chloride medium is favorable. It is also used for pH adjustment in flotation circuits, for cleaning of process equipment from mineral deposits and in treatment of mining effluents. Its application enhances metal separation efficiency and reduces deposits that interfere with process performance.

Metallurgical industry

In the metallurgical industry, HCl is a standard medium for pickling carbon and low‑alloy steels, effectively removing surface oxides and rust before cold rolling, galvanizing or application of protective coatings. Compared to sulfuric acid, it enables faster pickling at lower temperatures with less formation of solid by‑products. It is also used in the production of metal chlorides and in preparation of electrolytes for various electrochemical processes.

Oil & gas industry

Hydrochloric acid is a key chemical for acid stimulation of wells in carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. It reacts with limestone, dolomite and cement sheaths, increasing formation permeability and well productivity. It is also used for cleaning of surface equipment, pipelines and heat exchangers from scale and corrosion deposits, ensuring stable flow and improved heat transfer efficiency.

Cleaning industry

In the cleaning industry, HCl is used in professional products for removal of limescale, cement and mortar residues, rust and oxides from steel and other acid‑resistant materials. It is a common component of concentrated cleaners for boilers, heat exchangers and process equipment. Due to its strong corrosivity and volatility, it is applied under strict safety measures, with proper ventilation and compatible construction materials.

Benefits Of Use

  • high efficiency in pH adjustment and in dissolving carbonates, oxides and numerous metal salts
  • does not form insoluble sulfate sludge, which simplifies rinsing and reduces system blockage
  • broad applicability in water treatment, metallurgy, mining, oil & gas and industrial cleaning
  • available in a wide range of concentrations and purity grades, with straightforward handling, transport and storage in standard corrosion‑resistant equipment
