Barley Malt Extract

Barley malt extract is a highly concentrated source of readily fermentable carbohydrates obtained from germinated and dried barley. In animal and pet nutrition, it is used primarily as a sweetener, a source of rapidly available energy and a palatability enhancer. Due to its high content of maltodextrins, maltose and other soluble sugars, barley malt extract is particularly suitable for pet food formulations (dry, semi‑moist and wet) as well as for specialized poultry and swine feeds where good feed intake and stable energy supply are critical.

Source

Barley malt extract is produced from:

  • barley malt obtained by controlled germination and kilning of selected barley varieties
  • aqueous extraction of the malt, followed by filtration and concentration into a syrup or dried powder

Variations

  • Liquid barley malt extract (syrup) for wet and semi‑moist feeds
  • Spray‑dried barley malt extract for premixes, dry feeds and concentrates
  • Low‑ and high‑viscosity grades depending on hydrolysis level and dry matter content
  • Extracts with different DE (dextrose equivalent) values to fine‑tune sweetness and fermentability

Applications In The Industry

Poultry

In poultry (especially broilers and turkeys), barley malt extract is used at low inclusion rates as a rapidly available energy source and feed intake stimulant, particularly in starter diets where early feed consumption is crucial. It can be incorporated into liquid or dry premixes and complementary feeds, supporting stable feed conversion and helping to mitigate stress during diet changes or transitions to new feed types.

Swine

In swine nutrition, barley malt extract is mainly applied in piglet diets, where rapidly fermentable carbohydrates support early intake of solid feed and transition from milk to concentrates. In grower/finisher feeds and sow diets, it can improve palatability, homogeneity and energy density, especially in liquid feeding systems or whenever enhanced taste and stable feed intake are desired.

Dogs

In dog food, barley malt extract is an important functional ingredient for improving flavor and aroma, particularly in dry kibbles and baked or extruded treats. Its addition provides a pleasant, slightly caramel‑like note and contributes to uniform color development. In adult and puppy formulations, it is used at controlled inclusion levels as a source of readily available energy and as a binding component that improves texture and pellet cohesion.

Cats

In cat nutrition, barley malt extract is used at modest levels as a natural sweetener and palatability enhancer, with animal proteins remaining the dominant component of the recipe. It is particularly common in semi‑moist products and treats, where it helps maintain moisture, color stability and aroma. In functional products for indoor cats and treats, malt extract can support better acceptance of the formula and a stable energy intake without excessive reliance on sucrose.

Benefits Of Use

  • Rapidly available energy source based on soluble carbohydrates
  • Significant improvement of palatability in feeds and treats for dogs, cats, poultry and swine
  • Technological advantages – binding, improved texture, color and product homogeneity
  • Flexible use in liquid and dry premixes, complete feeds and pet food products
