Betaine

Betaine (trimethylglycine) is a quaternary amine and methyl donor naturally present in many plant and animal tissues. In the feed and aquafeed industry it is used as a nutritional additive and osmolyte in complete feeds, premixes and complementary diets. Betaine helps regulate cellular osmotic pressure, supporting water and electrolyte balance, particularly in animals exposed to heat stress or high salinity environments. It also functions as an efficient methyl donor in metabolism, partly replacing choline or methionine in formulations, and is widely used as a palatability enhancer, especially in fish and shrimp feeds.

Source

Feed-grade betaine is mainly derived from:

  • processing of sugar beet (betaine hydrochloride or anhydrous betaine)
  • synthetic production of pharmaceutical/technical quality, adapted for feed use

Commercially it is supplied as a high-purity crystalline powder, often standardized to a specific betaine content.

Variations

  • Betaine hydrochloride (Betaine HCl) – with additional acidifying effect in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Anhydrous betaine – high active content, neutral pH
  • Betaine combined with other additives (organic acids, electrolytes, vitamins) in anti-stress or performance packages

Applications In The Industry

Aqua

In aquaculture, betaine is widely used in diets for salmonids, carp species, marine fish and shrimp as an osmolyte and strong palatability enhancer. Under conditions of fluctuating water salinity and temperature, betaine supports cellular adaptation and osmotic balance, helping to stabilize feed intake and growth performance. In starter and grower extruded pellets it is frequently added to increase pellet attractiveness, shorten the time to first feeding and support improved feed conversion. In stressful situations (transport, grading, vaccination) betaine is incorporated into functional complementary feeds to nutritionally support the organism.

Poultry

In poultry nutrition, betaine is used in broiler, layer and breeder diets primarily as a methyl donor and osmolyte. Under heat stress, it helps maintain cellular water balance, which can contribute to more stable feed and water intake and to maintaining growth and laying performance. In broiler starter and grower feeds, betaine allows partial savings on choline or methionine in the formulation while keeping the targeted metabolizable energy and average daily gain. In layer diets it is often part of anti-stress and “summer” concepts together with electrolytes and antioxidants.

Swine

In swine diets, betaine is included in feeds for piglets, gilts and finishing pigs. In post-weaning piglets its osmolyte role supports water balance in intestinal epithelial cells, which is important for maintaining gut health during dietary change and environmental stress. In grower-finisher pigs, betaine is used as a methyl donor and as a tool to optimize energy metabolism and carcass composition, particularly in formulations focused on efficient feed conversion and carcass quality. In gilts, it can form part of strategies to support body condition and preparation for reproduction, in combination with B vitamins and minerals.

Benefits Of Use

  • Supports osmotic balance and cellular water homeostasis in fish, poultry and swine
  • Acts as an efficient methyl donor, with potential to partially replace choline or methionine in the formula
  • Helps maintain performance under heat and other nutritional stress conditions
  • Enhances palatability in aquafeeds and supports improved feed conversion efficiency
